Growth rates of protein crystals.

چکیده
Protein crystallization is important for structural biology. The rate at which a protein crystallizes is often the bottleneck in determining the protein's structure. Here, we give a physical model for the growth rates of protein crystals. Most materials crystallize faster under stronger growth conditions; however, protein crystallization slows down under the strongest conditions. Proteins require a crystallization slot of 'just right' conditions. Our model provides an explanation. Unlike simpler materials, proteins are orientationally asymmetrical. Under strong conditions, protein molecules attempt to crystallize too quickly, in wrong orientations, blocking surface sites for more productive crystal growth. The model explains the observation that increasing the net charge on a protein increases the crystal growth rate. The model predictions are in good agreement with experiments on the growth rates of tetragonal lysozyme crystals as a function of pH, salt concentration, temperature, and protein concentration.

Comparison of the effects of feeding two different diets on the growth rates and survival of Zebrafish (Danio rerio)
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of feeding two different diets on the growth rate and survival of zebrafish in order to produce resistant and better-quality fish. For this purpose, two experimental diets with different levels of protein and fat were given to zebrafish (20 days old) five times a day for a period of 70 days (10 weeks). The results of this research showed that fee...
متن کاملCrystal size distribution in metamorphic rocks: an example for the relationship between nucleation and growth rates with overstepping
Crystal size distribution (CSD) in metamorphic rocks provide fundamental information about crystal nucleation and growth rate, growth time and the degree of overstepping. CSD data for garnet, staurolite, kyanite and andalusite crystals from the aureole demonstrate that the earliest formed of these minerals, garnet, has the highest population density and the shortest growth time. The last formed...
متن کاملرشد بلور مخلوط NH4H2PO4-KH2PO4 از محلول آبی و اندازه گیری همزمان آهنگ رشد رخهای [100] و [101]
K1-x(NH4)xH2PO4 mixed crystals were grown by the low temperature solution growth method. [100] and [101] faces growth rates were investigated using an in-situ optical method. It was found that the growth rate of K1-x(NH4)xH2PO4 with x=o.1 and 0.9 along [101] is faster than that along [100]. FTIR spectra of the mixed crystals with selected composition values confirmed the presence of both sa...
متن کاملCrystal size distribution analysis of plagioclase in Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows in Dehaj-Javazm area, northwest of Shahre-Babak, Kerman
1. Introduction The rather limited Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows are outcropped in the Dehaj-Javazm area, north of Share-Babak, in the NW of Dehaj-Sarduieh magmatic belt as a part of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic assemblage (UDMA). The rocks contain significant amounts of plagioclase both as phenocrysts and microliths in the microlithic groundmass which play an important role i...
متن کاملGrowth kinetics of protein single crystals in the gel acupuncture technique
The growth of single crystals of tetragonal HEW lysozyme and thaumatin I into glass capillaries was monitored by time lapse video-microscopy. The crystals were obtained by unidirectional transport of the precipitating agent through capillaries of internal diameter ranging from 0.2 to 1.2 mm, using the gel acupuncture technique. For crystals growing from true protein solutions, the measured aver...
